Soldiers get taste of home thanks to Longview Beef Jerky.
Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan are getting a little taste of home thanks to Longview Beef Jerky.
The Longview business recently sent 2,340 packages (retail value $14,000) of their renowned beef jerky to Canadians serving in Kandahar. They sent enough so every soldier would get a package of Canadian beef.
Pete Lawson, president of Longview Beef Jerky, said it was something they felt compelled to do.
"We just wanted for them to have a taste of home and to show our appreciation," said Lawson.
Lawson has a military background as his father was a lieutenant colonel in the Canadian military and he knew he had to do something for the young Canadians trying to keep the peace in the areas of war-torn Afghanistan.
"We had to bite the bullet as a business, but it is not about the money," explained Lawson. "These guys are alienated from their families. This is a treat for them, something to remind them of home. It is a warm fuzzy feeling."
Some of the soldiers e-mailed Lawson photos of themselves enjoying their Longview Beef Jerky. The sentiment meant a lot to Lawson and the staff at the Longview factory.
"I was just tickled," admitted Lawson. "We could not have been more proud. It makes me real proud to be Canadian knowing we are over there."
Len Latoski, general manager of Longview Beef Jerky, agreed saying their contribution is a matter of Canadians helping Canadians.
"We wanted to show them we are thinking of them and we wish them well," said Latoski.
Latoski admitted it is a fine line between being excited they were able to do something for the Canadian soldiers and remaining composed knowing people are dying in Afghanistan.
Lawson said he encourages all Canadians to join the new movement to wear red on Fridays to commemorate the soldiers fighting overseas. It is a new tradition that appears to be gathering some momentum in Canada.
"I know the soldiers appreciate it and I hope it catches on," said Lawson. "It is a small thing we can all do."

Your Town | Ashley Ferraro Visits The Beef Jerky Plant In Longview
Alberta is known for its beef but in one Alberta town it's the Jerky that's turning heads
In this tiny community of only 303 residents, nine work at the plant Longview Beef Jerky
plant. Longview uses only real Alberta beef to make their famous jerky which is thin
sliced, spiced and dried.
"Being a connoisseur of Longview beef jerky is no different than being a connoisseur
if you are a wine drinker of your favourite wine" says Longview lover and owner Peter Lawson. Thats why, 10 years ago, when he first encountered Longview Beef Jerky, Lawson knew he had to become part of the story.
The recipe will always remain a secret, but the jerky is easy to find, just head to Longview, Alberta, or your nearest fine grocers, which ever is closest.
